3 Things You Definately Don’t Want On Your Wedding Cake

There’s a current and growing fashion for having Wedding Cakes decorated with Fresh Flowers to match a bride’s colour theme and own flower choices.   Whilst these cakes can look stunning and taste amazing, they may well harbour some pretty undesirable traits; ones that could make your Wedding Day ‘A Day to Remember’ for all the wrong reasons!

TOXINS AND ALLERGENS IN FRESH FLOWERS

Whilst edible flowers such as Pansies, Borage, Garlic Chives, Chive Flowers, Nasturtium Flowers, Mint and Rosemary Foliage are considered perfectly food safe there are many other more popular flowers which are definitely not recommended to be too near, or placed on, food products.  These may contain toxins or allergens which could cause an unpleasant reaction in some guests if consumed in even moderate quantities. There’s also the likelihood that even edible flowers will transfer undesirable flavours to your Wedding Cake, which is especially the case with fresh herbs and foliage.

It is essential fresh flower stems are secured inside cel or posy picks of the correct size to avoid sap coming into contact with the cake. Sap may not only mark the cake but be potentially harmful if ingested, especially by vulnerable guests or young children.

Pollen from flowers, especially lillies, (which are considered toxic)  can also transfer to a cake surface spoiling the pristine finished look.  Not all cake decorators, or brides thinking of decorating their own cakes, are aware of these issues until it’s too late.

PESTICIDES AND CHEMICALS

Most commercially grown flowers are treated with pesticides and chemicals in order to keep them entirely pest free. The laws relating to pesticides used on flowers and foliage for display purposes differ significantly from those designed to keep edible food pest free. The rules are much more relaxed as fresh flowers and foliage are not generally grown to be consumed, unless by specialist nurseries or those growing them to dry as decorations.

Flowers from florists or supermarkets will probably not have been handled with food safety in mind, potentially introducing bacteria or other contaminants.

UNWELCOME WEDDING GUESTS

Fresh flowers can be an absolute magnet to small bugs and beasties, especially spiders, woodlice and earwigs.  Having something scury across the wedding cake surface at the point of the cake cutting can be very off-putting!

Fresh flowers can also attract insects and bugs onto the cake being displayed for your guests to admire. Using Sugar Flowers means there will be no danger of the flowers wilting and dying if the Wedding Cake is placed in a warm or sunny area at the reception.

Fresh Flowers really need to be added to the cake shortly before the event to minimize wilting, which can complicate logistics for your florist as well at your cake decorator. Worse still if you are decorating the cake yourself and feel short of time.

You may also incur additional costs from your florist for preparing the flowers for cake decoration and most florist are not entirely happy adding flowers to a ready assembled cake at the last minute.  A collapsed cake is one of the last thing you’ll want on your Wedding Day!

SUGAR FLOWERS FOR WEDDING CAKES

So there are some very good reasons why Rainbow Sugarcraft recommend brides choose sugar flowers over fresh flowers for their Wedding Cake. The cake can then one less thing to worry about on your special day.

Handcrafted flowers include Sugar Roses, Peonies, Sweet Peas (in an array of gorgeous rainbow colours,) Ranunculus and Baby’s Breathe. These gorgeous flowers can be made in a wide range of fabulous colour schemes to match any bride’s wedding theme to absolute perfection. Handcrafted Sugar Leaves and Foliage also add an element of realism to cake decorations and acts as a naturalistic backing to any floral arrangement. The sugar flowers can be placed on the cake well in advance of the Wedding so you can be sure you are perfectly happy with the finished result.

Sugar flowers are completely food safe and are widely recommended for Wedding and Celebration Cakes. They can also be made in a huge range of different styles, sizes and colour to match any bride’s theme. Seasonal flowers may not be available on your wedding date, limiting your options. Sugar flowers are always ‘in season’ and if they are kept in a relatively dry environment, they can last a lifetime.

What better decoration could you have for your Anniversary Cake, or even a Baby’s Shower or Christening Cake, than the same beautiful flowers you enjoyed on your wedding day.

French Croquembouche Reaches New Heights in Wedding Cake Design

One of the latest commissions for Rainbow Sugarcraft was this 1.8 meter tall French Croquembouche Wedding Cake. Made with over 1,500 freshly baked and filled choux buns, the cake’s ingredients included 150 free range eggs and 15 pints of creamy milk.
The profiterole tower was decorated with handcrafted giant sugar roses in pale peach, baby pink and vintage ivory together with lily of the valley sprays.
The Rainbow Team started in the very early hours of Saturday morning filling crisp choux buns with a delicately flavoured crème patisserie before assembling the profiteroles into a mighty tower using scalding hot caramel.
Cake Decorator Mandi Mackenzie was chief engineer on the project,
“It’s always challenging making such a tall Croquembouche, especially when it’s going to end up so much taller than me, I usually end up standing on a chair to finish the tower!”

The dozens of handcrafted sugar flowers decorating the cake were made by Mandi and work colleague Comrie and carefully shaded to match the bride’s pastel colour theme.
The colossal Wedding Cake was then driven to Glamis Castle by David, who is well used to transporting epic cake designs.
Seeing the cake finally set up in the stunning dining room at Glamis Castle was the icing on the Cake for Rainbow Sugarcraft.

Gravity Defying Wedding Cake Spheres

ZoeandRobert-412

Rainbow Sugarcraft’s signature cake for 2015 will be these gravity defying Wedding Spheres.   No-one ever seems to realise it’s a Wedding cake until the couple cut into it and share that first morsel, as man and wife.

This cake can be reproduced in any colour theme, we’ve even made black spheres….

Though I still prefer these sparking ivory spheres, studded with eye-catching diamantes and decorated with beautiful lustred sugar roses.
