Frangipani Cutters

Teardrop Frangipani Cutters

with Instructions for Making

Frangipani flowers have a romantic frangrance and a wide choice of warm tropical colours. The Aztecs used frangipani and for many centuries the flowers have been used for human adornment, they are still woven into leis in Pacific Islands today. In India Frangpaini is known as the Temple Tree and the heady scent of its flowers is familiar in scared places.

These sugarcraft flowers are very easy to make and our preferred method for making them is given at the bottom of this page.

We prefer to use the Teardrop shaped cutters to make Frangipani Flowers.    Roll out petal paste or fondant icing fairly thinly, the flowers are quite fleshly so don't try to make them too thin.   Cut out 5 petals using one of the cutters so they are all the same size.

Place petals on a foam pad and using a balling tool roll from the edges to the middle to gently cup each petal.

Once all the petals are softly cupped place on top of each other in a fan shape, glueing each in place as they are lain down by applying a thin glue brush stroke on the overlapping edges at the bottom of each petal.   Right handed people usually fan the petals so the right edge overlaps, so this is the side to glue.  Being left handed we do it the other way round!

Once all the petals are lined up in a fan shape roll up like a swiss roll, till the first petal overlaps the last, you can then glue this in place if you so wish.   Then gently twist the end of the petals in a spiral.

Place flowers in a large nozzle tube or in your hand and use your fingers or a large balling tool to gently open up the flower, rolling around in a circular motion in the direction of the petals till you are happy with the shape.   Leave in an egg carton or in a nozzle tube to firm up.

If the flowers need to be wired we usually heat a wire in a candle flame then push the wire into the base of the fully dried flower.

Once dry finish with edible dust  as desired and pass through a little steam to set the colour and give them a beautiful waxy finish.
