How do you pronounce Quaich?
Most people pronounce Quaich as ‘quake’ which is not quite good enough for discerning Scots! If you want to be accurate you have to master the ‘ch’ sound, which is found in ‘loch’. So drop the short ‘k’ sound and
make the Quaich sound from the back of the throat to to be truly authentic.
What is the meaning of Quaich?
The word Quaich derives from the Gaelic “cuach” meaning shallow cup and King James VI of Scotland gifted a Quaich to his bride Anne of Denmark as a wedding gift, which started the traditional toasting ceremony we still use today. The Quaich is used to raise a special toast at Weddings whilst New Year Celebration Quaichs and Christmas Quaichs are used as cups off friendship to bring harmony and good fortune.
How can you have a Quaich Ceremony during the Covid pandemic?
Current Scottish Government guidance is that no food or drink should be consumed within the Wedding ceremony but couples can still enjoy this magical ritual by limiting the Wedding Quaich use to between themselves, thereby sealing the bond of their marriage by sharing their first drink together.
